22 Oct 2017 (Sun) - Term 4 Week 7 (End-of-Year, ACE Camp & Other Matters ... ...)

Dear Parents,

With the end of the examinations, some of us will realize that there may significant difference in the 'numerical' grade that your son has achieved compared with that when he was in primary school day. As mentioned previously, the format and content of the subjects in secondary school can be different from what the boys are used to. The examinations are just part of a longer journey here in SJI, one of the many skills that we would want the boys to learn and acquire. We need to encourage the boys to take be honest with their results, on what went right and what went wrong, what they've done well and in what areas can they do better. This is also an opportunity for the boys to take ownership of their own learning such as sharing with us, the adults, how we can help themplanning their revision schedule for the holidays, etc.

In about 2 weeks, the boys will embark on another phase of the life where they'll return to the great outdoors - ACE Camp 2017 @ Pulau Ubin. It is a time where we, at home and in school, need to work together to encourage and support them as they 'venture into the unknown'. We must use the many teachable moments that Mother Nature has to offer to teach our boys the many lessons that life has prepared for me - self-confidence, resilience, tenacity, team spirit, ... ... the list goes on. Many of the boys are looking forward to the upcoming ACE camp and it's with certainty that the majority of the boys with enjoy their stay in Ubin. Do email your son's Class Tutors or myself if you need any clarification. Kindly refer to the section below on <ACE Camp 2017 - Things to Note>.

Have a Blessed Weekend ahead!

As you help to prepare your son for ACE Camp, I do hope that you'll find the following information helpful ... ... They are basically pointers which we've gathered from our experiences in bringing boys to outdoor camps. Do note that there may be specific instructions pertaining to this camp, which may not be covered in this note.
  • Packing - Use a Haversack. This is because the boys will be camping over at different sites on the island each night and they are required to bring their luggage with them. Carrying a haversack is a lot easier than pulling a trolley bag along on gravelly or muddy paths.
  • Waterproof ALL Items. Use Ziploc bags and/or line haversack with a huge trash bag. Better still, do both. We cannot be sure that it will not rain, and we cannot be sure that the luggage will be completely under shelter at all times – it might rain during our transit between camp sites. Having clean, dry clothes to change into after a long day of activities will be a luxury - something the boys would appreciate and must therefore plan for. In addition, we do not want them catching a chill wearing damp clothes.
  • Clothings - Pack by Day. Pack clothes according to days and activities, each set in individual Ziploc bags. For example, put 1 shirt, 1 pair of shorts, 1 pair of underwear into 1 Ziploc bag for Day 2; another for Day 3, ... ... you get the idea. Pack the clothes for wet activities into another Ziploc. Label each bag if necessary. Please teach your boys how to expel all the air out before sealing the bags shut. This will help save space.
  • Day Pack / Bag. Pack a “day pack”. This is a smaller bag for day activities. It should be light and compact, large enough to contain a water bottle, repellent, energy bars … items the boys need for 1 day.
  • Shoes - A clarification ... ... The boys will already be wearing a pair of shoes when they report. They just need to pack 1 pair of slippers and 1 pair of old (but not falling apart) covered shoes. This pair of old shoes is for water activities. It is necessary because we do not want the boys to get injured due to sharp objects embedded in the sand when they wade through shallow waters while moving the kayaks. Alternatively, in place of old shoes, some of you might want to consider getting your sons water booties but this is not a necessity.
  • Insect Repellent & Sun Block. These are necessary. The mozzies are ferocious at Ubin; in addition, they may have to endure sandflies. Do get a repellent that contains deet. However, it might not be suitable for boys with sensitive skin, so please exercise discretion when purchasing repellent for your sons. As for sun block, do your your son a SPF 50 sun block that is preferably water resistant (does not get washed off easily), otherwise we can only hope that the boys reapply sun block regularly.
  • Extra Plastic / Ziplop Bags. Do pack an 2-3 extra plastic / Ziploc bags. 1 of it can be used as a “day pack” for kayaking. The boys can put their sunscreen, energy bars and perhaps a small towel in, inflate it and stuff it under the elastic straps of the kayaks.
  • Other Items. Do check the packing list that was given earlier.  Click <here>.
Do note that the most of the items should be available at the supermarket / pharmacy. However, the one-stop shop would be the “Beach Road Army Market” and “Decathalon”. The former sells cheap and good equipment while the latter is a more upmarket camping and adventure gear retail chain.

15 Oct 2017 (Sun) - Term 4 Week 6 & 7 (Post-Exam, ACE Camp & Other Matters ... ...)

Dear Parents,

With the exams over, the boys have over the past week enjoyed themselves tremendously learning and having fun in the sun, sea and sand. For the few classes that have not 'hit the water', it's something that the boys will look forward to next week. Looking at the menu that the boys have prepared puts a smile on ones face but also brings about mixed feeling. Seeing the joy on their faces surely reminds us adults of the many skills (from how to cook rice to how to water-proof their belongings) that we need to impart to these young men in their journey into their teenage years. There's surely a role for all of us and much awaits in the weeks ahead  ... ...

Over the course of next week, your son will be receiving his End of Year examination scripts. As the format and content of the subjects in secondary school can be different from what they are used to, it is not surprising that some of the boys would not attain the grades that they used to in primary school. Credit must be given to the vast majority of Sec 1s who have put in much effort and have obtained commendable grades. For that handful of the Sec 1s, we look forward to working with you so as to help your son achieve his fullest potential. Do feel free to drop your son's Class and Subject Tutor/s and/or myself an email if you have any queries. However, I do seek your patience in giving us some time to get back to you ... ...

16 Sep 2017 (Sat) - Term 4 Week 2 to 5 (Exam, ACE Camp & Other Matters ... ...)

Dear Parents,

Thank you for your patience and understanding over the past weeks. With less than 2 weeks to the end-of-Year examinations, we seek your co-operation in working together with the school to settle the boys down in doing their revision. Your presence and supervision at home during this period of time would be most helpful for your son - that he knows he is not alone.

On a separate note, earlier this week, the Sec 1s were briefed about the upcoming ACE Camp and Sec 1 Canoeing Contact Time (CCT). The latter starts once the exams ends. Many of the boys were excited as these are events that they have heard of and have been looking forward to in their journey as a Josephian. A crucial part of the outdoor experience is outdoor cooking where the boys will have to cook their own meals. For your convenience, the school has made arrangements for vendor to come to school for Sec 1s to purchase necessary equipment. It is not compulsory for Sec 1s to purchase the items for the vendor and parents may choose to purchase items elsewhere. The items required and packing list for ACE Camp can be found below. Parents may also consider an outing to 'Beach Road Army Market' the next few weekends to help your son unwind and de-stress as you help him shop for some basic items for ACE Camp.

Have a Blessed Weekend ahead!

    Dear Parents,

Time flies and the longer than usual September holidays are coming to an end. I do hope you had a fruitful week with your son the past week. As we prepare for a new term, it would be most helpful if you could spend a little time helping your son prepare for school (haircut, attire, etc.).

With the boys preparing for their upcoming End-of-Year examinations, it is important that we, the adults, be mindful that what they need most now is our presence, not nagging ... ... The fact that they know we are around to support them at this time of heightened stress is something they would greatly appreciate.

    Have a Blessed Weekend ahead!

Catholic Education Sunday on 10 Sep (Sun). Message from Most Rev William Goh, Archbishop of Singapore. Click <here>
    • Why? The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Singapore has declared 10 Sep 2017, this Sunday, as Catholic Education Sunday. The theme of Catholic Education Sunday 2017 is “Celebrating 165 years of Catholic Education in Singapore – Passing on the Light”. Josephians strongly urge you to be present with your families for specific Masses and if possible, do wear your school uniform or causal Friday t-shirt or something that proudly proclaims you are a Josephian and more importantly a Lasallian who is a student or work in a Catholic Education setting.
    • What to Do? Come, be present and support SJI as unique individuals that God has created. We pray that we will in turn use our gifts for the service of humanity. Josephians have volunteered to be present and will join the choir, greeters and ushers. Sec 1s are urged to be present for one of the mass as it involves our school, St. Joseph’s Institution in celebration of 165 years of Catholic Education in the Archdiocese of Singapore.
    • Where? Mass at St. Ignatius Church @ 0815 am or Novena Church (Mass at SJI Jr School Hall) @ 12 noon.

The pointers and feedback may be useful as you help your son review what he has learnt in the past 8 months. Your support for these young men during these seemingly stressful times would put them in good stead - setting an example for them as their first teachers and role models.

Celebrating Teachers' Day today, we are thankful for the gift of teachers and say a silent prayer for the 'men and women' who had left an impression in our lives. Today, we also remember that we parents are in fact our son's first and most important teachers. His first grunt, step, word, etc. These numerous firsts were taught by you, his first teacher. There are many more things that his 'little mind' will learn and 'catch' from you. As we celebrate this day, we are thankful too for this blessing - our vocation (calling) to teach and inspire. Here's wishing all of us ... ...

Blessed Teachers' Day to One & All!

Feedback from Subject Tutors (Sec 1, Common Test 3)
            Image result for feedback
To help parents have a better understanding and insight to the various subjects, the teachers have provided some pointers and feedback which would be useful as we help the boys review what they had learned in the past semester and some common pointers to note.
            • English Language
              • Components for TA3. TA3 for English consisted of (i) Independent Reading Portfolio, (ii) Media Studies, (iii) Passage-based Question (Animal Farm), (iv) Paragraph Building and (v) Comprehension.
              • (i) Independent Reading Portfolio. The nine pieces of work in this portfolio were completed over two terms. Portfolios which are commendable are not only highly organised and complete with all the required pieces of written responses but also show strong evidence of good textual knowledge and creative personal responses. Meaningful learning and depth in thought are also prominent in the reflection component of these reading portfolios.
              • (ii) Media Studies. This assignment requires students to demonstrate understanding of a media text through deconstruction or construction of a book cover of Animal Farm. The concepts in focus are purpose, audience and context which form the underlying reason for the choices made in the visuals and text of the book cover. The assignments which are awarded high grades are those with accurate and in-depth analysis of the media text with reference to its purpose and intended audience.
              • (iii) Passage-based Question (Animal Farm). Good answers are highly organised responses which begin with a clear and accurate point, developed with strong textual evidence, succinct explanation and a link to the point made. Equally critical are coherence, clarity in expressions and seamless transitions in the responses.
              • (iv) Paragraph Building. The narrative writing task demands the use of a range of techniques for effective communication of an intended message. These include the use of metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole and other techniques. Students are required to use a range of vivid verbs and descriptive adjectives to illustrate the action, thought, appearance or feeling of the character through a show-and-not-tell method.  The weak writings demonstrate simple sentence structures and plain language use while the strong ones demonstrate interesting ideas through the effective use of language and varying sentence structures to achieve impact.
              • (v) Comprehension. This reading comprehension test demands careful reading of the passage and understanding of the questions in order to respond with accuracy and conciseness. The types of question include factual, inferential, language for impact and vocabulary in context questions. Weak answers, especially those lifted from the passage show a lack of comprehension and sensitivity to the use of words in the text.
            • Geography
              • Components for TA3. TA3 for Geography consisted of a Common Test (20m - 25%), Enrichment Day Report [Geographical Investigation] (20m - 50% ) and a graded assignment timed and completed in class (10m - 25%).
              • Summary of TA3. For TA3, the focus was to teach the students geographical skills, in addition to content on the Arid Tropics (Climate, Formation of Deserts and Map Reading Skills). The students were assessed more according to how they read and interpret data from maps and diagrams as answering data-response questions is a key skill to applying Geography in the world around us. The students had good practice and exposure to such questions since work is usually assigned once every two weeks. Students are generally performing better as they are more used to the answering skill of the different sections of the Geography Paper. Students were made aware of the expectations of the subject, therefore, many scored better in this Term's written assessments. However, there are some students who did not do as well in their Geographical Investigation reports. The most common mistake which led to the poor results for the reports was the inability to read the questions and understand the expectations of the questions. Many of their answers lack elaboration and application, as requested by the question. Students need to learn to read the questions carefully and answer accordingly.
              • Preparing for End-of-Year Examination. Students should refer to the Sec 1 Geography EOY 2017 (Revision Outline) which was emailed to them by their respective Geography teachers. When studying, they should attempt to write their own notes, redo the worksheets from the Geography file and consult their teachers when in doubt.
            • History
              • Topics Covered. In Semester 2, the boys were taught basic essay writing skills based on the 3 topics: (I) Reasons for Mass Migration in the 19c, (ii) Why did migrants come to SG in 19c and (iii) Reasons for decline in Qing Dynasty in 1911. They were also taught the more advanced source based skill of comparison. While these new skills will be assessed in the Final Year Examinations, TA3 was still based on foundational source based skills. (A) Basic Inference Skills. (i) To be able to make valid inferences which does not lift/describe the source and (ii) To be able to back up their inferences with evidence from the source (evidence based assertions). (B) Purpose Skills. (i) Identify the correct target audience based on context and provenance, (ii) Identify message (main point) of the source and (iii) With the audience and message attained, students should be able to identify the desired outcome of the source based on the historical context.
              • Common Mistakes. Include the boys' inability to make a valid inference as boys lifted or described the source. Some boys did not correctly identify an audience or message thus resulting in a baseless outcome. It is essential that the boys are able to infer, because it will form the basis for their comparison questions as well.
              • What to Do. Over the holidays, boys should read through their corrections, and worked examples of Source Based questions to better understand the requirements of the questions. They should also read through their content for: (i) mass migration (ii) migration to SG and (iii) decline of Qing Dynasty.
            •  Lower Secondary Science
              • Components for TA3. TA3 for Science consisted of a Common Test (30m - 25%), Enrichment Day Report (10m - 25% ) and a Science Practical Test (10m - 50%).
              • Skills Required. Students is exposed to practical skills and interdisciplinary project for this term. The learning of science is not confined to just pen and paper test. For Term 3, most of the topics covered are in biology and thus students have to be familiar with a number of new terms. They also need to understand and remember the concepts behind what they are learning. Definitions and using of correct terminologies in tests and exams are also essential.
            • Mathematics
              • Components for TA3. TA3 for Mathematics comprised of a Field Trip (20%), ACE Learning Quiz (20%) and a Common Test (60%).
              • Skills Required. The competencies tested were knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts, geometry and construction. It was a fair and manageable paper. Many students do not provided accurate reasons for their answers in geometry. Algebraic Equations and Algebraic Manipulation were mastered by the majority of students. Students who did not perform up to expectation seemed to lack the extra practice and it would be beneficial for them to clarify their doubts with their Math teachers if concepts have not been mastered.
              • What to Do ... ... For the coming holidays, the students must continue to revise and practice topics taught in Semester 1 and 2. They must complete the past years papers and the Ten Year Series (TYS) questions found in the booklet.
            • Mother Tongue Languages (Chinese Language)
              • Components for TA3. TA3 for Chinese Langauge comprised of one Essay Test (40%), one Informal Email Writing (20%) and one Common Test(40%).
              • Skills Required. Students were taught to write and Narrative Essays in Term 1 and 2 with the focus on descriptive development . Students who scored well in the essays were able to fully develop the descriptions in their essays with the use of wide and precise vocabulary, varied  and accurate sentence structures. However, some of the students write out of point while others made a number of mistakes in their sentence structures. Some of the students could not differentiate the narrative essay of person or and incident. They need to read more to improve their language proficiency.
              • Language Test. Vocabulary and proverbs are components that students can prepare in advance.  Students who prepare well (i.e. 'study') for these two components will generally score higher marks than their peers. However, students have to learn the answering skills in the reading comprehension. Some of the student lack the necessary vocabulary and hence this affects their ability to understand the passage. They need to read more to improve their language proficiency.
            • Mother Tongue Languages (Higher Chinese Language)
              • Components for TA3. Sec 1 HCL TA3 assessments comprised of one Essay Test (40%), one Email Test (20%) and 1 Common Test (40%). The common test paper consisted of a vocabulary test and a test on Chinese idioms and comprehension.
              • Composition. Students were taught and practice on how to 'read' the question so as to answer what is being asked - answering for the content. Some students did not score well for their composition as they did not read the questions carefully and thus wrote out of point. Students need to 'read' the questions carefully and improve their writing skill so as to do better for composition.
              • Language Test. For the language test, vocabulary and proverbs are components that students can prepare for in advance. Students who prepare well (i.e. 'study') for these two components will generally score higher marks than their peers. However, to really score well for HCL, students need to learn how to answer what is being asked in the comprehension

              27 Aug 2017 (Sun) - Term 3 Week 10 & Holiday Matters  ... ...

              This is a true story ... ...

"Never say not enough, always say "good enough". Where others would have seen the lack of a school field this group of boys saw opportunities. They thought out of the box for "possibilities" and practised a "can do" attitude with determination and positivity. The boys recognised and value that they are "good enough". With a grateful heart they recognized that they had was a "Golden Opportunity for Possibilities"!

This is the story of the SJI 'C' Division football team. A football team that had no field to practise on, no field markings, no goal posts and no corner flags, until just recently. Instead, they used the area behind the chapel and played football 'tennis'. The boys sprinted up the slopes of Malcolm Road to improve their speed and ran along Goldhill Avenue and back to school to improve their stamina. This team is made up of boys with an iron heart. Through their sheer hard work of the coaches and the teachers this group of average group of football boys emerged Zonal Champions! From there, the team worked even harder to make their way into the top 4 of the National competition and emerged 3rd place in the Nationals.

              ------------

              Dear Parents,

The story of the SJI 'C' Division football team reminds us that the boys are in the prime of their life - youth. Teenage years are the time where one exudes vigor and spirit, a time of numerous opportunities and many possibilities - even when things are down and not going the right way. As the examinations draw near, we must be mindful to help the boys take ownership of their own learning.

For a start, we can guide and prod them gently by writing down the exams dates and to check with on details such as topic, format, etc for the various subjects, to do up a revision time-table. It is important that we refrain from taking over but gently hand hold them and when necessary let them fumble and fall once in a while. Yes, it'll hurt them (and us) but it'll definitely make them stronger. More importantly, always remember that we are in this together.

              Have a Blessed Weekend ahead!

Dear Parents, Image result for learn from mistakes

As the boys come to the end of a busy week of common tests, it is timely that we help them learn from what they've 'achieved'. With the boys entering teenage-hood, it is wisdom that we (the adults) need. To know when and how to speak to these young man as they enter into teenage-hood, wanting independence and keeping more to themselves. We need and must, in our very subtle and caring way, help the boys realize that each of them have that potential to do well and that the only thing that's holding them back are themselves.

Coming to the end of yet another term, I would like to thank you for the support thus far - monitoring of your sons’ academic pursuits to ensuring his regular attendance in school and commitment to his CCA. It would be most beneficial if you could spend some time going though with your son on his school work. Do help him plan and set aside time to revise for the upcoming exams scheduled to begin in late Sep.

                Have a Blessed Weekend ahead!

                    6 Aug 2017 (Sun) - Term 3 Week 7 to 9 Matters [#OneNationTogether, ACE Camp Dates, etc ... ...]

                    Dear Parents,Related image

#OneNationTogether, the theme for this year's National Day, is a rallying call to unite all Singaporeans and that ‘Together’ Singaporeans united in times of uncertainty and challenges will be able to overcome the odds. As Singapore celebrates her 52nd Birthday, we are reminded that we, at home and in school, are always #Together working for the well-being of this teenager who has been entrusted to our care.

With the upcoming common tests, it is timely that we gently remind the boys of the need for them to be on task (to take ownership of their own learning) especially with the upcoming common tests. It is crucial that we (the adults) work together during this time of heightened stress to support these young men and help them adjust and cope. *Do note that constant vigilance (stalking around the child while he is doing his revision) and reminders (aka. nagging) is not recommended ... ... Kindly also note that due to various administrative and logistical requirements, there is a slight change in dates for ACE Camp. Parents having any queries are kindly requested to drop Mr Jude Tan <judetan@sji.edu.sg> an email.

Here’s wishing each and everyone a “Happy ‘Birth’-day” ... ... Have a Blessed Week ahead!

                        Dear Parents,
                        Mailer-icon.png

Josephian of all ages gathered to celebrate their alma mater's 165th Anniversary over the weekend. Our history since 1852 has been rich, not only because of the school's accomplishments but, more so, because of the many contributions Josephians have made to Singapore, the world and even to the local Church. All these have come to be because of the gift of the De La Salle Brothers.

SJI is a gift and the school is blessed to be gifted with Lasallian Partners like yourself. Thank you for sending your son to SJI. Thank you too for your support as we journey with your son through his teenage years.

                        Have a Blessed Week ahead!

                          Dear Parents,

                          YouTube Video

With the boys enter in teenage-hood, there is present a growing tension between autonomy and independence which may cause a certain amount of pain and heartache for us parents. As part of the school's Religious, Moral and Social Education (RMSE) programme, the Sec 1s  are now looking at their relationship with their father or in some cases a significant male figure in their lives. The boys are watching us all the time* and to help the boys become aware of the many issues that come with growing up, they will be tasked to conduct <An Interview with The Man>. This is a deliberate opportunity created for the son to know his Dad - his growing up years, life as a teenager, his relationship with his parents, how he coped with school work and CCA, his army days, etc). When your son approaches you, do be open and be honest with him. Some of the boys may be shy, finding it awkward doing the interview and a small hug or an encouraging word from us the adult will go a long way  ... ...

                            Dear SJI Family,

Hello, we are part of a Citi-Youth For Causes Project, an inter-school movement in support of Beyond Social Services Singapore called Project Candenti. Candenti", means "Incandescent" in Latin; full of strong emotion and passionate. We believe that this accurately describes what we aspire to be, full of passion for serving with a desire to make a difference in society.

Beyond Social Services is a Voluntary Welfare Organisation (VWO) but they view themselves as a village that helps raise disadvantaged children and youths. Beyond reaches out to such disadvantaged youth by offering a hand of friendship. They organise different activities to allow for the youth to be engaged in meaningful activities with others, helping to foster new, healthy friendships. They believe not only in providing monetary handouts or necessities, but also in promoting long term self-sufficiency allowing them to blossom into responsible adults, move past their socio-economic drawbacks and beyond social services by 25. The money they collect through donations and fundraising will go to the creation of educational and development programmes, as well as the establishment of structures which link caregivers to job and training opportunities. So far they have reached out to over 10,000 rental units in government rental blocks in Bukit Ho Swee, Lengkok Bahru, Henderson, Whampoa, Ang Mo Kio, Lavender, Stirling, Jalan Bukit Merah and Ghim Moh. If you would like to find out more about Beyond, do tell us! We would be more than happy to oblige.

We hope that you would be able to help by coming down to our charity concert on 29 July 2017 at the Biopolis Auditorium. We appeal to your charitable spirit to assist us in making this charity concert a huge success for our beneficiary! Furthermore, we will be selling our merchandise on 17,19 and 21 July 2017 in the canteen. Do show your support on those days!

                            Thank you and God bless!

                            24 Jun 2017 (Sat) - Term 3 Week 1 & 2 [Start of Term, BYOD, Time-table for Term 3, etc]

                            Dear Parents,

With the month-long holidays coming to an end, it would be most beneficial if you could spend some time going though with your son on his school work and completing his holiday homework, if any. As they are Sec 1s, it might be good to remind them that there are only about 12 more weeks to their End-of-Year Examinations. Discounting all the weekends and school holidays, the boys have less than 60 days to their first exams in secondary school. We, at home and in school need to work together to help these boys make time and plan for their revision. Parental assistance in checking on your son's personal grooming (e.g. haircut, nails, etc) will also be most appreciated.

To all our Muslim friends, we extend our warmest greetings of "Selamat Hari Raya". Here's wishing you and your loved ones a warm and blessed Aidilfitri, showered with love and happiness, with peace and joy!

Have a Blessed Long Weekend ahead!

                                • Dos and Don'ts. Sec 1s are to note of the various matters with regards to taking care and being responsible for your personal devices. This does not only concern the usage but also the safe-keeping of the device at all times. Sec 1s will be briefed in detail at the next Level Assembly. Parental reinforcement of the following would be appreciated.
                                • Taking Ownership & Personal Responsibility. (i) Taking Ownership - Safe-keeping of Devices. Devices must either be locked in their personal locker or be with student at all times. Leaving their devices in their bags unattended or they run off to play is a sure no-no. (ii) Personal Responsibility. Sec 1s must be responsible for their own belongings at all times, this includes the device they are bringing to school. Being responsible also entails that they ensure that their devices are fully charged the night before. Charging of devices in school may lead to 'unforeseen' incidents in which students trip over a web of charging cables.
                                • Usage of Device. (i) In Class. Devices can only be used in the classroom only after permission had been sought from the teacher present as this is the right and polite thing to do. (ii) Outside Class. Devices should only be used for school-related work. Mind-less surfing, watching of YouTube videos, gaming, etc are strictly prohibited.

                              3 Jun 2017 (Sat) - Holiday Matters

                              Dear Parents,

On Wednesday, the Sec 1s spent a day outside the classroom walking through the nature trails at the Botanic Gardens, Bukit Timah and MacRitchie. We were blessed with good weather this morning and the boys had a different school day learning in a very different way. It's amazing what one will 'see' if we take time off our regular schedule to learn the more beautiful and important things is life ... ...

Thank you too to the parents for taking time off for the Parent-Teacher Meeting earlier this week. Our apologies too for not being able to accede to all the request for meetings. Do feel free to drop an email to the various subject teacher/s. To help you have a better understanding and insight to the various subjects, the teachers have provided some pointers and feedback (that can be found at the end of this email) which would be useful as we help the boys review what they had learned in the past semester and some common pointers to note.

As we recall the past 5 months that have passed by so quickly and look forward our well-deserved June holiday, thank you for all your patience and kind understanding. Credit must be given to the vast majority of Sec 1s who have settled well into school life and have put in much effort and have obtained commendable grades. For a handful of Sec 1s, we look forward to working with you so as to help him achieve his fullest potential for the coming semester. What's most important is that we let these young men take ownership things, affirm them for their efforts and teach them the value of hard work, or for some of them - the lack of it. We need to let them know that no matter what happens and regardless of their results, we will always be there for them.

                              Have a Blessed Holidays ahead!

Feedback from Subject Tutors (Sec 1, Semester 1 2017)
To help parents have a better understanding and insight to the various subjects, the teachers have provided some pointers and feedback which would be useful as we help the boys review what they had learned in the past semester and some common pointers to note.
                              • English Language
                                • Semester 1 Assessments for English Language comprised of 2 Essays, 2 Comprehensions, 1 Oral Presentation, 1 Media Studies Analysis, 1 Table from a Short Story and 1 Passage-Based Question on Animal Farm (Common Test). The Students were taught to write and Narrative Essays and  Personal Recount Essays in Term 1 and 2 with the focus on descriptive development [Show, Don't Tell]. Students who scored well in the essays were able to fully develop the descriptions in their relevant and interest-aroused essays with the use of wide and precise vocabulary, varied  and accurate sentence structures and accurate grammar.
                                • Students with average marks need to progress from their Primary School standard essays and heed to what has been taught and shared during their English Language lessons in SJI. For the Passage-Based Question on Animal Farm, students who answered well had paid close to the terms of the questions and selected accurate and significant traits and emotions for the characters with judicious selection of textual evidence. Students must know the text very well and need to develop their elaboration and analysis. For Semester 2 , we continue with Animal Farm with focus on characterisation and themes on Leadership and Power.
                              • Geography
                                • Geography's assessment for Semester 1 includes a class test (16%), reflection journal (16%), two graded assignments timed and completed in class (34%) and a common test (34%). As for results, 95% of the cohort passed Geography with a third scoring distinctions. In the Semester 1, the focus was to teach the students geographical skills, in addition to content. The students were assessed more according to how they read and interpret data from maps and diagrams as answering data-response questions is a key skill to applying Geography in the world around us. The students had good practice and exposure to such questions since work is usually assigned once every two weeks. During the initial stage, many will falter due to the unfamiliarity of a new subject. After the first assessment, most students were made aware of the expectations of the subject, therefore, many scored better in the subsequent assessments.
                                • Geography is not a difficult subject to study and when the students are able to dismiss the misconceptions about Geography being a difficult and hard-to-study subject, they will do well. There were many students who improved on their understanding of Geography and saw its relevance to the world we live in as they were able to rise to the occasion and dismiss the misconceptions. The SJI geography curriculum is unique because it is planned and taught conceptually. So, there is no textbook nor assessment books available that supplement our curriculum. The students each have a Geography file which contains all the notes, worksheets and past years' papers that they require and to help them along their Secondary school years. Therefore, it is not necessary to supplement with other assessment books. When in doubt, the student should be self-directed towards their own learning by researching on the topic and seeking the help from their teachers.
                              • History
                                • Assessment in history is mainly based on foundational source based skills. Based on the timed assignments and common test the following skills are important for students must be able to better their grades: (A) Basic Inference Skills.
                                • For the upcoming holidays, students can revise on the past semester using the practices which can be found in the history file. Students should also read up on China which is also found in the history as it will be covered in Semester 2.
                              • Lower Secondary Science
                                • Term 1 & 2 Assessments. The assessments Term 1 & 2 for Science comprised of a common test and a practical test with the majority of students doing very well for the latter. Therefore most students did much better in science obtaining results which is much higher than they usually would. However, the boys still must be commended for their efforts but also be reminded that as science is a content-based subject, clarity of concepts through note-making would help them better understood and apply what they have learned.
                                • Learning of Science. Most students are less competent in answering questions which require the interconversion between units. Hence they should revisit this concept in Chapter 2 during the holidays. The learning of science requires students to be well read which is something that today's student sorely lack. Students must be encouraged to read their textbooks and preferably beyond the lesson notes given to them. They could also make their own notes, and attempt to connect new concepts with what they already know.
                              • Mathematics
                                • Term 2 assessment for Mathematics comprised of a class test (20%), ACE Learning Quiz (20%) and a common test (60%). The competencies tested were knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts and problem solving. It was noted that basic concepts in Basic Algebra, Algebraic Equations and Algebraic Manipulation were mastered by the majority of students. Students who did not perform up to expectation seemed to lack the extra practice and it would be beneficial for them to clarify their doubts with their Math teachers if concepts have not been mastered. For the coming holidays, the students must continue to revise and practice topics taught in Semester 1 (by attempting the SJI TYS for Sec 1) before we embark on Statistics and Geometry in Semester 2.
                              • Mother Tongue Languages (Chinese Language & Higher Chinese Language)
                                • Term 2 assessment for Chinese and Higher Chinese comprised of Project Work (80%) and a Language Test (20%). The theme of the project work is family. It comprised of a family tree chart, oral presentation, video of family gathering and a composition on family. Most students did well for this project if they put in effort to collect data and prepare for the presentation. For language test, vocabulary and proverbs are components that students can prepare in advance. Students who prepare well for these two components generally scored higher for the overall.
