2017, Term 2

3 Jun 2017 (Sat) - Holiday Matters

Dear Parents,

On Wednesday, the Sec 1s spent a day outside the classroom walking through the nature trails at the Botanic Gardens, Bukit Timah and MacRitchie. We were blessed with good weather this morning and the boys had a different school day learning in a very different way. It's amazing what one will 'see' if we take time off our regular schedule to learn the more beautiful and important things is life ... ...

Thank you too to the parents for taking time off for the Parent-Teacher Meeting earlier this week. Our apologies too for not being able to accede to all the request for meetings. Do feel free to drop an email to the various subject teacher/s. To help you have a better understanding and insight to the various subjects, the teachers have provided some pointers and feedback (that can be found at the end of this email) which would be useful as we help the boys review what they had learned in the past semester and some common pointers to note.

As we recall the past 5 months that have passed by so quickly and look forward our well-deserved June holiday, thank you for all your patience and kind understanding. Credit must be given to the vast majority of Sec 1s who have settled well into school life and have put in much effort and have obtained commendable grades. For a handful of Sec 1s, we look forward to working with you so as to help him achieve his fullest potential for the coming semester. What's most important is that we let these young men take ownership things, affirm them for their efforts and teach them the value of hard work, or for some of them - the lack of it. We need to let them know that no matter what happens and regardless of their results, we will always be there for them.

Have a Blessed Holidays ahead!

Feedback from Subject Tutors (Sec 1, Semester 1 2017)
To help parents have a better understanding and insight to the various subjects, the teachers have provided some pointers and feedback which would be useful as we help the boys review what they had learned in the past semester and some common pointers to note.
  • English Language
    • Semester 1 Assessments for English Language comprised of 2 Essays, 2 Comprehensions, 1 Oral Presentation, 1 Media Studies Analysis, 1 Table from a Short Story and 1 Passage-Based Question on Animal Farm (Common Test). The Students were taught to write and Narrative Essays and  Personal Recount Essays in Term 1 and 2 with the focus on descriptive development [Show, Don't Tell]. Students who scored well in the essays were able to fully develop the descriptions in their relevant and interest-aroused essays with the use of wide and precise vocabulary, varied  and accurate sentence structures and accurate grammar.
    • Students with average marks need to progress from their Primary School standard essays and heed to what has been taught and shared during their English Language lessons in SJI. For the Passage-Based Question on Animal Farm, students who answered well had paid close to the terms of the questions and selected accurate and significant traits and emotions for the characters with judicious selection of textual evidence. Students must know the text very well and need to develop their elaboration and analysis. For Semester 2 , we continue with Animal Farm with focus on characterisation and themes on Leadership and Power.
  • Geography
    • Geography's assessment for Semester 1 includes a class test (16%), reflection journal (16%), two graded assignments timed and completed in class (34%) and a common test (34%). As for results, 95% of the cohort passed Geography with a third scoring distinctions. In the Semester 1, the focus was to teach the students geographical skills, in addition to content. The students were assessed more according to how they read and interpret data from maps and diagrams as answering data-response questions is a key skill to applying Geography in the world around us. The students had good practice and exposure to such questions since work is usually assigned once every two weeks. During the initial stage, many will falter due to the unfamiliarity of a new subject. After the first assessment, most students were made aware of the expectations of the subject, therefore, many scored better in the subsequent assessments.
    • Geography is not a difficult subject to study and when the students are able to dismiss the misconceptions about Geography being a difficult and hard-to-study subject, they will do well. There were many students who improved on their understanding of Geography and saw its relevance to the world we live in as they were able to rise to the occasion and dismiss the misconceptions. The SJI geography curriculum is unique because it is planned and taught conceptually. So, there is no textbook nor assessment books available that supplement our curriculum. The students each have a Geography file which contains all the notes, worksheets and past years' papers that they require and to help them along their Secondary school years. Therefore, it is not necessary to supplement with other assessment books. When in doubt, the student should be self-directed towards their own learning by researching on the topic and seeking the help from their teachers.
  • History
    • Assessment in history is mainly based on foundational source based skills. Based on the timed assignments and common test the following skills are important for students must be able to better their grades: (A) Basic Inference Skills. (i) To be able to make valid inferences which does not lift/describe the source and (ii) To be able to back up their inferences with evidence from the source (evidence based assertions). (B) Purpose Skills. (i) Identify the correct target audience based on context and provenance, (ii) Identify message (main point) of the source and (iii) With the audience and message attained, students should be able to identify the desired outcome of the source based on the historical context.
    • For the upcoming holidays, students can revise on the past semester using the practices which can be found in the history file. Students should also read up on China which is also found in the history as it will be covered in Semester 2.
  • Lower Secondary Science
    • Term 1 & 2 Assessments. The assessments Term 1 & 2 for Science comprised of a common test and a practical test with the majority of students doing very well for the latter. Therefore most students did much better in science obtaining results which is much higher than they usually would. However, the boys still must be commended for their efforts but also be reminded that as science is a content-based subject, clarity of concepts through note-making would help them better understood and apply what they have learned.
    • Learning of Science. Most students are less competent in answering questions which require the interconversion between units. Hence they should revisit this concept in Chapter 2 during the holidays. The learning of science requires students to be well read which is something that today's student sorely lack. Students must be encouraged to read their textbooks and preferably beyond the lesson notes given to them. They could also make their own notes, and attempt to connect new concepts with what they already know.
  • Mathematics
    • Term 2 assessment for Mathematics comprised of a class test (20%), ACE Learning Quiz (20%) and a common test (60%). The competencies tested were knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts and problem solving. It was noted that basic concepts in Basic Algebra, Algebraic Equations and Algebraic Manipulation were mastered by the majority of students. Students who did not perform up to expectation seemed to lack the extra practice and it would be beneficial for them to clarify their doubts with their Math teachers if concepts have not been mastered. For the coming holidays, the students must continue to revise and practice topics taught in Semester 1 (by attempting the SJI TYS for Sec 1) before we embark on Statistics and Geometry in Semester 2.
  • Mother Tongue Languages (Chinese Language & Higher Chinese Language)
    • Term 2 assessment for Chinese and Higher Chinese comprised of Project Work (80%) and a Language Test (20%). The theme of the project work is family. It comprised of a family tree chart, oral presentation, video of family gathering and a composition on family. Most students did well for this project if they put in effort to collect data and prepare for the presentation. For language test, vocabulary and proverbs are components that students can prepare in advance. Students who prepare well for these two components generally scored higher for the overall.

Dear Parents,

As we come to the end of another term, kindly take note of the following matters. The boys will be receiving their Term 2 test results* and this will be a good starting point for us to help the boys 'take stock' of how he has adapted to life in secondary school. Emphasis should on how we (at home and in school) can help him do better rather than how well he has done. This is the time for the young man to take ownership and account for his achievement or lack of it - on what he had done well and what he should do so that he can do better.

Have a Blessed Week ahead!

Other Matters
  • Advisory by Singapore Police Force (SPF) for 2017 June Holidays. In view of the upcoming June school holidays, SPF would like to remind all students of the undesirable consequences of crime as well as to take measures to prevent themselves from being victims of crime.
    • Theft-related offences. Students are reminded not to be involved in theft. Shop theft and theft of bicycles continue to be the predominant type of crime committed by youths. Students should be reminded that theft is a serious offence that could result in a criminal record. Students should always exercise self-control and not succumb to temptation or peer pressure to steal.
    • Being victims of crime. Students should always take care of their personal belongings, stay alert to what is happening around them, and avoid uncomfortable situations with strangers. The number of scam cases is also on the rise. In particular, students should exercise caution when making online purchases. In cases of online purchase scam, scammers commonly entice buyers to purchase popular items at very low prices, without any intention of delivering the goods after receiving payments. These items include USS/concert tickets, apparels, virtual items in online games, latest mobile phones and other gadgets, etc. In some cases, scammers even induce victims into making multiple payments on false claims of customs/processing fees, securing better deals with bulk purchases, etc.

1 May 2017 (Mon) - Term 2 Week 7 to 9 Matters [Common Test, Sec 1 Enrichment Day, PTM, etc ... ...]

Dear Parents,

Last Friday, the Sec 1s were at Sports Hub to support the school track team at the Nationals. The team did well qualifying for the finals of several events and even clinching a gold medal. The school did not win any championship but it was a day where the boys witnessed what doing one's best mean. Eleanor Roosevelt once said that 'You have to accept whatever comes and the only important thing is that you meet it with the best you have to give'.

Hard work sometimes seems to be a dying art form that we are failing to teach our children. For the past term, our students have flown the SJI flag high by their achievements and attainments at the various National School Games and Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) performances. The school has been blessed that through the hard work of these boys and girls, we have been affirmed of what we do at SJI.

With the end of another term, do note of the Common Tests that are scheduled for the coming weeks. For the Sec 1s, it is timely that we gently remind them that there is no 'free lunch' - that there is nothing gained without hard work. Hard work teaches perseverance, persistence, and determination. It teaches one that working hard pays off and that not everything in life is easy ... ... Most importantly, we must assure them that hard work is always easier as they have their family and school walking with (not working for) them.

Have a Blessed Week ahead!

    16 Apr 2017 (Sun) - Term 2 Week 5 & 6 Matters [Founder's Day, Nat'l Track & Field, Sec 1 Common Tests, etc ... ...]

    Dear Parents,

As the school celebrated Founder's Day last week, we welcomed home a group of close to 40 former teachers. It was the school's way of saying 'Thank You' to the teachers who have given so much of their lives to the school. The gathering was a wonderful one. For those of us present, there were moments when we felt 'much younger' ... ... More importantly, the tour enabled us to hear and recollect their SJI story, so that we can continue building on the SJI legacy started by our Founder, St. John Baptist De La Salle. Many alumni and friends of SJI will celebrate when they gather for the 165th Anniversary Dinner on 22 July.

With our Christians friends celebrating Easter, here’s wishing one and all a Easter that is full of hope, love and happiness for you and your loved ones. Have a Blessed Week ahead!

    2 Apr 2017 (Sun) - Term 2 Week 3 & 4 Matters [Founder's Day, Holy Week, Dental Form, etc ... ...]

Dear Parents, Image result for de la salle founder day

It has been a very busy 2 weeks since Term 2 started ... ... Yesterday, the school held her first Open House at our redeveloped campus where with more than 1800 potential Josephians and their parents in attendance. To the many Sec 1s who came to welcome these 'potential' Josephians, thank you for your presence. Thank you for sharing your SJI Story. Together with the your fellow Josephians, you have been the best ambassadors of what an SJI Education is all about.

With each passing week, the school term will only get busier with school work and CCA in full swing. It can be tiring for many of the Sec 1s, especially with up to trice weekly CCA training which is often physically strenuous. For a number of the boys, CCA training is something which they may not be familiar when they were in primary school. It is only time when these young men choose not to or 'forget' things such as completing assigned work, etc. It is important for us (at home and in school) to remind them that they have the ability and capacity to complete any work and/or go through the hardest CCA training so long as they choose to.

As the school celebrates Founder's Day this week, we are reminded of the words from our Founder, St John Baptist de La Salle that it requires that 'gentleness of a mother and firmness of a father' to nurture these young hearts that have been 'entrusted to our care'. Home is a place of love & comfort that that will always remain constant in this world of uncertainty. It is the setting for an individual’s physical, mental, emotional and spiritual growth. Home is also a child's the first classroom ... ... It makes sense then that parents are then child's first teachers. As we celebrate the life of the founder, the Patron Saint of All Teachers, we are reminded of that vocation that we have chosen - to be parents to our child - their teacher.

It may be timely for us (the adults), to take a deep breath, sit back and perhaps 'grade ourselves' on how we have done thus far ... ... As a parent (teacher), what have I done well? In what areas can I do better? Moving forward, we will probably need to make changes and adapt to these young men so that we can better support them as the enter into puberty. Most importantly, we must always assure the boys that his parents and teachers are around to help should they need any.

    Blessed Founder's Day to Everyone!

    18 Mar 2017 (Sat) - Term 2 Week 1 & 2 Matters [Personal Grooming, Holidays Homework, BYOD, etc ... ...]

    Dear Parents,

Time flies and I hope you managed to have a good and restful break with the family. Term 2 is usually packed with events, especially as it is a full term - 11 weeks for us at SJI. With the start of a new school term, it'll be most helpful if you could gently remind and check your son if he had completed his assigned holiday homework, if any. A quick check on his personal grooming (e.g. haircut, nails, etc) will also be most appreciated.

With the pervasive use of technology and it's 'invasion' in our everyday life, do note that the school has a "Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)" programme, where students will bring and utilize their personal computing device for learning. For the Sec 1s, BYOD will commence only in Term 3 and details on this will be shared with parents when we meet again at the end of Term 2.

On a personal note, if you are considering a device for your son, I would strongly recommend that the boys be 'given' a recycled device. Do drop me an email should you need assistance in 'convincing' your son on this. The teenager needs to given the opportunity to be responsibility and ownership - to learn how to use and more importantly care for the device. Scratches and the rare dent on a new device is something not pleasant. Most importantly, this would be a good time for you to work with your son to set the rules on how he should manage his life his new 'friend' - the device.

    Have a Blessed Weekend ahead!

    Project COPE 165

As the Lasallian schools in Singapore mark 165 years of Lasallian presence in Singapore, the Lasallian family would like to embark on a project to help those who potentially may be 'marginalised' from society because of the possibility of being disconnected from society. From 1 April 2017 Singapore will no longer have 2G on its bandwidth. Mobile operators will cease 2G services and the spectrum will be used to provide for more advanced services like 3G and 4G. This will result in some people being disconnected. For more information, click <here>. The schools are responding to this situation with Project Cope 165 - a month-long project which aims to benefit (i) Selected residents of one-room rental flats and (ii) Migrant workers from a shelter.

The Lasallian family would like to seek your help in several ways: (i) Donate your old mobile phones and chargers (still in good working condition), (ii) Sponsor a phone or sim card by donating some money (Cheque payable to PROJECT C O LLP), (iii) Assist in checking the working conditions of donated mobile phones and/or (iv) Assist in distribution of phones and SIM cards and (v) Assist in teaching recipients on how to use their new phone. Your son may bring the items or cash/cheque to school on any day of the week. His class tutor will assist in safe-keeping the item/s if required. An acknowledgement slip will be given upon collection. Collection for the above will be done on 23 Mar (Thu) at the school canteen. We look forward to your generous support. If you have further queries, please feel free to contact LYNK at <sglynk@gmail.com>
